27. Healthy life

It is estimated that genes are about 30% responsible for our overall health and how we age, while 70% is due to our lifestyle. Following recommendations from the experts, most of which focus on moderation, can help you to live a healthier and, in some cases, a longer life.

Eat a healthy diet. This means limiting your total fat consumption to 30% or less of total calories, eating lots of fruits and vegetables and not overeating. The US Department of Agriculture, the group that developed the food pyramid, allows you to tailor an eating plan based on your age, activity level, and height and weight through their website.

Exercise regularly. Find an activity that you enjoy and do it at least 5 days per week. Exercising is helpful for weight control, cardiovascular health and bone health. It will also help you to feel better by reducing stress. Eliminate bad habits. If you smoke cigarettes, try to quit. If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to 2 drinks per day if you are a man and 1 drink per day if you are a woman. Identify other bad habits in your life and develop a plan for eliminating them.

Relax and enjoy life. Life in the 21st century is very stressful and stress has been linked to a number of illnesses because it weakens our immune systems. If relaxing doesn't come easy to you, try an activity like yoga, tai chi or meditation. Keep up with the latest information on healthy living. Researchers are continually learning more about healthy living; some of what they learn can be put into practice. Moderation is the key to leading a healthy life. Holding yourself to rigid standards for eating and exercise can backfire by causing unneeded stress. Enjoy life and make as many healthy choices as you can.
