37. Customer Relationship Management

Customer relationship management (CRM) consists of the processes a company uses to track and organize its contacts with its current and prospective customers. CRM software is used to support these processes; information about customers and customer interactions can be entered, stored and accessed by employees in different company departments. Typical CRM goals are to improve services provided to customers, and to use customer contact information for targeted marketing. CRM software is an integrated information system, which is intended to plan, schedule and control both presale and post-sale activities of the company. However, some do not feel that CRM programs are entirely good, with many raising concerns about the system invading customer privacy. A company's use of CRM software however does not automatically imply the collecting of new data. What it does mean is that can make better use of the data the company already has, yet in most instances they are used for collecting new information.

Effective CRM also reduces staff stress, because attrition - a major cause of stress - reduces as services and relationships improve.

CRM enables instant market research as well: opening the lines of communications with your customers gives you direct constant market reaction to your products, services and performance, far better than any market survey. Good CRM also helps you grow your business: customers stay with you longer; customer churn rates reduce; referrals to new customers increase from increasing numbers of satisfied customers; demand reduces on fire-fighting and trouble-shooting staff, and overall the organization's service flows and teams work more efficiently and more happily.

One of the primary functions of CRM software is to collect information about customers. When gathering data as part of a CRM solution, a company must consider the desire for customer privacy and data security, as well as the legislative and cultural norms. Some customers prefer assurances that their data will not be shared with third parties without their prior consent and that safeguards are in place to prevent illegal access by third parties.
