38. Library

A research library is a library which contains an in-depth collection of material on one or several subjects. A research library will generally include primary sources as well as secondary sources. Large university libraries are considered research libraries, and often contain many specialized branch research libraries.

Research libraries can be either reference libraries, which do not lend their holdings, or lending libraries, which do lend all or some of their holdings. Some extremely large or traditional research libraries are entirely reference in this sense, lending none of their material; most academic research libraries, at least in the U.S., now lend books, but not periodicals or other material.

You can also access selected web-based online information resources from the Library. Our staff will help you use these. Some of these resources you can even access from your home or office. We will be introducing additional online resources as we identify and evaluate new resources which meet our members’ needs. Below we offer you a glimpse of the kinds of products we have for you.

The fully automated library is designed to make your experience in the library smooth and efficient. The online catalogue will help you find the book you are looking for, the automated check-in and check-out facility for the issue and return of books will mean no queues or waiting time. You can reserve or renew your books by phone, fax or email.

The strength of the Library lies in its collection of books and periodicals of specialized nature. The Library collection spans over the subjects like - Biometry, Nutrition, Botany, Medicinal Plants, Chemistry, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Geology, Palaeontology, Microbiology, Mycology, Zoology, Developmental Biology and so on. There are several periodicals available in the Library from its first volume. All the volumes of 'Biological Abstracts' are available in the library in printed format.
